I love the feels of January and New Year Resolutions. I love how most of us reflect on the past year and decide how we will make the next one even better. Resolutions are like beautiful gift boxes full of HOPE, wrapped up in shiny inspiration & motivation. What’s not to love? I know there are some out there who aren’t big on resolutions because more often than not, a majority of folks don’t reach goals they set in January – which lends to feeling like we’ve “failed”. I personally think that’s a lame reason not to dream and set intentions for positive growth. THE OLD Most years I would write down some main life areas like fitness, spirit, business, etc. and decide what my goal is for each. This might look similar to your list:
![]() This year my Resolutions look a little bit different. I’m looking a bit more outside myself when it comes to goals and I’m focusing on the two precious humans God’s entrusted me to take care of. And I’m looking at FUN. That’s right. My goals for 2019 are centered on Family & Fun. The number 1 Resolution I want to achieve is in my decision-making. When choices arise, I will check it by this little hierarchy in my mind: 1. God’s Will & Ways : Does this align with God’s plan for my life and edify my spirit? Have I prayed about it? 2. My personal JOY connected with it : Will choosing this make me feel awesome? Does this feel light or heavy? 3. The benefit to my Family : Will this choice benefit my family or take from them being top priority in my life? THE NEW My hope is that this year, instead of focusing on myself, and my business goals; I will be first and foremost invested in my children and having a blast! What does this look like? I’m setting goals I’d like to achieve with my kids; things I’d like them to learn, places I’d like to take them, & experiences I’d like them to have. I’ve set up a space in our home to utilize as a learning area where we can do intentional activities together. It’s allowed us to have some really great quality time, my boys get to benefit from my background as a preschool teacher, and we are using all their things meaningfully! I have specific goals for them and it keeps me accountable to make that time with my children. And they've been LOVING it!! ![]() And I’m being intentional about having fun! My type A productivity-obsessed nature tends to keep me working, even in my free time. I want to change that. But it’s not easy for me. So I have to decide to plan for beach days, movie dates, and girls’ night out time. It really hit me last year when asked “What do you do for fun?” and I didn’t have a quick answer. I enjoy what I do, yes. And I’m so grateful for that. But do I want to be 90 years old and have spent my life at a computer? No. So if you’re in my contact list on my phone, watch out! I’m might be ringing you for a lil night on the town! Doesn’t that sound so silly though? Having to choose fun? It’s an area I want to flourish in this year. We are all different and I think goal setting can feel stale if we do the same type of thing come January 1st. Ok, how much weight do I need to lose? What do I need to get better at? How much money do I want to make? Not that there is anything wrong with goals around health and finances. But what are some things dear to your heart that might need some TLC? Is there a dream you’ve put on hold – start working on it! Is there a place you’ve been wanting to visit – start planning your itinerary! Is there a dance you’ve always wanted to learn? Look up classes! NEW YEAR, NEW CHANCE. WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH THESE 365 DAYS?
We are only given a finite amount of time on this earth and even then we are only given certain seasons. My boys will be small just for a few short years. And really, why wait? Why wait on changing your life and beginning to do those things you’ve always wanted to do? There is no better time than the present. It's my hope and prayer that this January, you give your heart a little REFRESH. While considering goals/resolutions/intentions for 2019, be sure they make your heart happy. Do things you love to do, make time for them. I think that's a great way to plan for the year. If looking at your goals for 2019 feels like a drag, I'd urge you to modify until your list lights you up and excites you! I’m so grateful for an abundance of mentors, resources, and tools that help goal-setting and achieving become much easier to do and grasp! I’ve been learning how to set a goal and exactly how to break it down so I can reach it! Do you have a handle on how to do it? Would you like to see an article on goals? I would really love to know special goals you folks are setting for this year. Would you be willing to share them with me? Email me to share and let’s let the universe know we are making things happen in 2019!!!
