Struggling with acne is no fun. No matter what age you are, whether a teen or a 40-something mom of 4, pimples are the pits. But before trying out harsh treatments, please try some of these healthy lifestyle changes or safer products first. My journey with acne hasn't been severe, but I did encounter my share of blemishes growing up and still get an occasional zit, even as I enter age 40. I have had acne scarring a lot of my adult life, thus far, but I've learned there are healthier ways to address skincare and hope you're able to find a solution that can be simple and affordable for you. 9 Safer Solutions to Reduce Breakouts1. Avoid harsh astringents Alcohol based astringents strip face of oil so your skin will overcompensate and create more oil. Your skin's microbiome helps create the health of your skin and alcohol based astringents kill good bacteria on your face and make room for bad bacteria. Try using a non-alcohol toner like Beautycounter's Instant Matte Toner that helps preserve ideal moisture levels while purifying skin. Another EWG verified option is Everyone Tone made with essential oils of Bitter Orange, Orange, and Lemon. 2. Try Oil Cleansing or Double Cleansing Oil Cleansers can be a great alternative to harsh facial washes that can sometimes strip skin of oils and cause irritation. Beautycounter's Countertime Cleansing Oil has never broke me out and leave my face feeling fresh and clean. Another EWG Verified Oil Cleanser is by Akar Skin. I haven't tried this brand, but it is made with tea tree oil and is certified non-toxic. Double Cleansing in the process of washing your face twice. First with an oil-based cleanser to remove makeup and impurities, then follow with any good face cleanser. I recommend Beautycounter's Cleansing Balm followed with Countercontrol Gel Cleanser. Sorry sis, you'll have to skip the cheese pizza if you want to try and keep those breakouts at bay! 4. Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables Antioxidants in fruits and veggies can help reduce inflammation. Some skin-friendly produce includes:
8. Drink herbal teas Green tea has been proven to help with acne when taken orally or even applied topically. Check for organic teas when you can. I love Yogi brand tea and GreenTeaHawaii also has some yummy refreshing tea flavors. 9. Try a charcoal product Activated Charcoal has anti-inflammatory benefits. I like this Charcoal Cleansing Bar by Beautycounter. Be sure to follow with a good moisturizer like this one. This Charcoal Mask is made with kaolin clay with binds to sebum to help reduce excess oil and deep clean pores. ![]() A regimen I have used and recommend for its safer ingredients is Beautycounter’s Countercontrol Regimen or Collection. This collection is made with a signature SkinBalance complex to treat oily and acne-prone skin. It helps to mattify and balance skin while clearing breakouts without the use of harsh astringents. Key ingredients in this regimen include wintergreen, rosebay willow, and aloe vera. Products included are: Countercontrol Clear Pore Cleanser I use this cleanser daily because I love it’s light exfoliation. Countercontrol Instant Matte Toner I personally don’t use this toner often but it is an excellent alternative to harsh alcohol-based toners. Countercontrol All Over Acne Treatment This product I keep on hand always for pesky period pimples that still try to show up once a month. Countercontrol Matte Effect Gel Cream I don’t use this product because I prefer to moisturize with Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion. Countercontrol SOS Acne Spot Treatment I tend to use my All Over Treatment more than this one. I hope you give these a try if you are on a acne-fighting mission. Some healthy lifestyle changes could make a huge difference. And using safer products (EWG verified) will benefit your health in the long run as well. Send me any more safe, healthy, natural solutions that may have helped you with acne, and I'll add them to the list!
