I hired Demery Mezin in 2020 to help re-design several spaces in my home. It was an amazing experience and Demery was kind enough to let me interview her. I'm sharing about who she is, and how we did an incredible interior design job completely virtually! This blogpost contains affiliate links. Thank you for your supporting my blog, business, and family I chose to update my main living spaces, including the open kitchen/dining area and living room, and she also designed a beautiful home office space for me. I found Demery through Instagram and had be following her for a while. I slid into her DM and we set up a consult via facetime. She was friendly and made me feel at ease, with something that was somewhat of a nervous project for me to consider. Demery gave me a quote after hearing my needs, budget, and taking a virtual walk through of my spaces. And we got started from there. She sent me mock up images of the spaces, shopping lists including links to exact products, and worked with me on adjusting any ideas. (And trust me I had a lot of "what about this" moments!) I want to pause here to share with you our interview. Meet Demery, Oahu Based Interior DesignerWhat made you get into interior design? I went to school for graphic design and had been working as a freelance graphic designer for many years but I felt bored and uninspired. I’ve always loved decorating, rearranging, and beautifying spaces! In my free time I would work on my own home or help friends and family with their homes, I’d watch every design show and flip through design magazines for hours. I would dream about doing interior design and home styling for a living, then finally I thought why not start?! I had a working knowledge of colors, textures, and space and I knew I had a lot to offer so I decided I would dive in and pursue the career I was passionate about! What is your favorite part about what you do? Helping people! I love helping my clients achieve the feeling that they are aiming for in a space, whether that’s inspired, relaxed, or uplifted and energized. Being born and raised in Hawaii, I truly value the people. I am proud to be a part of this great community. Helping people to find their personal design style and fall in love with their home brings me joy! BEDROOM BEFORE AND AFTER Tell us a little about the process you go through with your clients: First, I get to know my client: their lifestyle, their household, their needs for the space, and their personal style. I do this through a coffee chat (in person or virtual), a tailored questionnaire, and exchanging inspo images back and forth to gauge their design preferences! Then the conceptual stage starts where I design the layout along with finding the best furnishings and decor based on the clients style and budget. Using my graphic design skills, I create a digital mock up of the space so the client can see exactly what it will look like. Along with the digital mock up I deliver an inventory list with item sources for easy shopping and all recommendations for styling the space. The client has the opportunity to make one round of revisions if needed and then they are free to use their personalized guide to finish the space on their own or hire me to do purchases, installation and styling as well. What would you tell folks who want to update a space but have a very limited budget? There is still a lot you can do with a very small budget! I have worked with budgets of all sizes and there is no job too big or too small, seriously. I can suggest key updates and changes that can affect the feel of your space. I’m available to help you rework a space and to give you recommendations on how to change things up without buying a thing! Some of the biggest changes come from things that you take away (that you don’t need) and how you arrange the things you already have. The feel and flow of a space is everything! Which room in a home deserves a designer’s touch most? This is a good question! I say the place you spend the most time should serve you the most. For some that might be their home office, living room, the kitchen or bedroom. This is where you might spend more time or money to create a functional and pleasing environment. Why should someone hire a designer instead of tackling a design on their own? Creating the space you want can be daunting, overwhelming, or stressful - that’s where I come in and make it fun and achievable! Second before you spend money on new furniture or decor, I can create a digital mock up of your space finished with every detail so you can see the result before you make all the purchases! This helps reduce stress and worry about the outcome and let’s clients feel confident when making purchases. The third reason is: it’s your home, and it’s important! Your home is a reflection of you and your life and it should make you feel good. How can HHM readers work with you or contact you? I love to talk to people! I’m happy to answer any small design questions you might have or give you an estimate for a design project. Final Thoughts on hiring an Interior DesignerI always thought of myself as a pretty decent decorator of my home. I've got compliments from guests on how nice and comfortable things were. Hiring a designer was out of my usual comfort zone. But I can confidently say, it was worth it and I would do it again and again! In fact, later I hired Demery to help re-design my master bedroom. While many of us have some knowledge about pretty home things, professionals like Demery have a gift and expertise that can really help create a room that is drool-worthy or simply just what your dreamed of but never got around to doing. I'd say that was my main hang up. I didn't put in the time, effort, and had way too many ideas. Demery took my style and made it come to life in my home. We used a lot of my own furniture and moved, updated, or mix and matched, while also adding new items too. Read about how I redid my Home Office here, with inspiration and help from Demery. I've shared sneek peeks of my master bedroom update on my Instagram If you're looking for an interior designer to get the job done for you, I absolutely recommend Demery. The most amazing thing is that we did our projects virtually! So even if you are not local on Oahu, Demery can still help you create the space of your dreams! I want to thank Demery again for being so amazing to work with, and for taking the time to interview with me. Please be sure to follow her on Instagram and don't be shy to reach out for a consult!
