I may be a boymom but I have grown up as an aunty since I was 5 years old. Honest. And one of my closest and dearest nieces is becoming a teenager next week. As a mama on a mission to use clean products on my family, I wanted to discover what a teenage girl might want as she steps into the world of cosmetics.
I’m putting together a list of Clean Beauty for Teen/Tween Girls and this will be a 4 part series. I’ll also publish lists for clean skincare, bath/body, and hair care so be sure you’re getting my emails, so you don’t miss them! Sign up here.
My 12 year old niece isn’t a big makeup fan yet, but some of her friends are. I am not one to encourage heavy makeup at a young age, but I do recall as an early teen, wanting to experiment with makeup and follow some trends of the time. My list will consist of some basic products a makeup beginner could start with, all made with safer ingredients and EWG - verified. Let’s get into it!

A good start for younger ladies is a tinted moisturizer or BB Cream. Foundation can be complicated and typically wears heavier. Some excellent products for light to medium coverage are:
Beautycounter’s Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer $45
This tinted moisturizer offers light sheer coverage and a dewy finish. What’s great is that it has safe SPF inside for sun protection. EWG Verified
Rejuva Minerals BB Cream $24.95
This Titanium Dioxide Free and Mica Free Tinted Moisturizer by Rejuva Minerals offers sheer color, a dewy finish, is paraben free and also EWG Verified.
Blush is definitely on trend. Powders are popular, but cream products are definitely gaining attention and can often be used as a lip color too. Here are some recommendations for clean blushes in two formulas.
Mineral Fusion Blush $26.99
This powder blush by Mineral Fusion comes in an array of shades and is Hypoallergenic - Cruelty Free - Vegetarian - Gluten Free - Talc Free - Fragrance Free - Paraben Free - Phthalate Free and EWG Verified
Beautycounter Color Pinch Cream Blusher $38
I love how this Cream Blush Stick is so multi-purpose! Tap on cheeks for a flush of color, and use on lips as a lipstick too! I have the shade Hibiscus and it’s so cute for so many skin tones. Creamy application and convenient to use. Also EWG verified.
Call me old fashioned or conservative, but I’m not recommending lipsticks here on my tween/teen product list. I think lip gloss is a great beginner step into beauty for lip product as it gives a sheer color and no-brainer application. My suggestions for clean ones are:
Beautycounter Beyond Gloss $29
I love how ethically sourced the ingredients are for this lip gloss and I’ve worn a few shades. They are stunning and don’t give any nasty smell or taste. Bare Shimmer is always a popular neutral but pretty shade. EWG verified.
Sally B’s Yummies B Glossy Lip Gloss $18
These lip glosses are made with 98% certified organic ingredients, are free of lead and petroleum, and EWG Verified.
Mascara is a pretty staple makeup product. Even amongst a lot of grown women with the most simple of makeup routines, mascara is typically one to always be included. Here are some safe suggestions for your teen.
Beautycounter’s Lengthening Mascara $29
This mascara is made with nourishing botanical ingredients, such as organic bataua oil and carnauba wax, and can help condition lashes. Made with zero harmful ingredients and EWG Verified.
Maia’s Mineral Galaxy Natural Mascara $18.49
This mascara is made with natural ingredients and comes in 3 shades. Paraben, Phthalate, and petrochemical free, this is EWG verified and a good starter mascara.
Translucent Powder is great for setting makeup and will pair well with the Tinted Moisturizers listed above. Especially to help with shine. Steer clear of powders made with talc as some talc can contain cancer-causing asbestos. Here are two safer options.
W3LL PEOPLE Bio Brightener Invisible Powder $20
This setting powder is made with pearl powder and aloe leaf extract. No Talc, No Parabens and EWG Verified.
Beautycounter’s Mattifying Powder $39
This translucent setting powder helps reduce shine and set your makeup for a finished look. One of my favorites. Apply with a soft bristle brush or a beauty sponge. EWG Verified.
This is a great place to start if you have a young one in your life just beginning their experience with makeup. Not setting a rule, simply offering suggestions for clean products. As healthier products become more important, as families value cleaner beauty, let’s start them young so that they can be aware of what’s available and make best choices for themselves as they grow up.
If you are new to clean beauty and not sure what EWG verified means. It means that the Environmental Working Group recognizes products that meet their strictest standards for your health. This means none of EWG's chemicals of concern. This means full transparency. This means a mark you can trust. It means EWG approved. You can visit their site at ewg.org for more information.
